I was recently lucky enough to travel to Lizard Island Resort on the Great Barrier Reef on my recent trip to Australia. Lizard Island is one of only two resorts located directly on the Great Barrier Reef (the other one being Heron Island) and access to the Island is by a scenic one hour flight from Cairns.

From touchdown, you instantly know you are in a tropical and remote part of Australia. The five star luxury resort is a jewel in the Great Barrier Reef and the instant access to the amazing snorkeling directly off the beach is not to be underestimated. The nearby clam gardens - just a five minute boat ride from the resort - is some of the best snorkeling I have experienced in Australia. And that's before taking a boat trip one hour further afield to the Outer Barrier Reef.

A true luxury experience without being formal, Lizard is the perfect place to dine on outstanding cuisine, taste the best of Australian wines, hike the many Island walking trails, be dropped at a private beach with a picnic basket for lunch or indulge in a spa treatment. To maximize the experience, I would recommend a minimum of three nights. With a minimum age requirement of 12 years, you won't find any small children while visiting Lizard Island. The resort caters to all - couples, divers or family groups are sure to find something for everyone while visiting Lizard Island. I can't wait to return!
